A comparative study on the effects of injection pressure and intake pressure on the combustion characteristics were carried out in both low temperature diesel combustion (LTC) and conventional diesel combustion regime. The injection pressure and intake pressure significantly affected the combustion phase in the LTC regime due to the longer premixing time relative to the conventional diesel combustion regime. In the LTC regime, the injection pressure mainly affected the duration of early stage combustion while the intake pressure significantly affected the duration of late stage combustion. The reduction of soot emissions with higher injection pressure and intake pressure was predominant in the conventional combustion regime where the soot formation rate is high. In addition, direct flame image was taken to observe the flame structure of two different combustion regimes to correlate with the soot emission results and combustion characteristics.
