As low-temperature combustion (LTC) mode in diesel engines is implemented to lower emissions, mode transition to conventional diesel combustion must be well achieved in order to cover the entire operation range. Of the many operating parameters to control during mode transition, combustion noise level must be stabilized for the comfort of users. An experimental study was conducted in a heavy-duty diesel engine to investigate the effect of injection strategies on noise reduction during mode transition. By adopting pilot injection strategies, the noise level represented by the maximum peak pressure rate was successfully stabilized between modes.
