The main objective of this paper is to investigate spray and flame characteristics of waste cooking oil (WCO) biodiesel and diesel fuel in a heavy-duty diesel engine. The timing of –5 crank angle degree (CAD) after top dead center (aTDC). The results indicated that start of injection was later with WCO biodiesel than that of diesel. The WCO biodiesel showed poor atomization characteristics with longer spray tip penetration length and narrower spray than diesel. In therms of combustion, the WCO biodiesel had lower natural flame luminosity than that of diesel due to lower participate matter emissions level.
