Split injection strategy was applied to a spray-guided direct-injection spark-ignition (DISI) engine under a lean stratified ope-ration condition. Cylinder pressure analysis, exhaust emissions measurement, and visualization of the spray and combustion were applied to investigate the effects of split injection. With a split injection, combustion showed lean premixed combustion-like characteristics, having the retarded combustion phase and slower combustion duration. Nitrogen oxides (NOx) and smoke emissions were reduced with split injection due to the moderate combustion speed and enhanced local homogeneity. However, incomplete combustion products were increased by over-mixing effect. In this study, two different parametric studies of split injec-tion were carried out. One is controlling stratified combustion by split ratio with a long dwell time while the other is controlling dwell time with a large amount of the first injection quantity. Results showed that split injection can be an effective way to reduce NOx and smoke emissions with a comparable indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP). From the results of combustion and in-cylinder spray visualization, the liquid phase of the mix-ture and luminous sooting flame were reduced significantly with the split injection strategy.
